The Mitchell Kernel girls’ basketball team have been close so many times this season in knocking off a really good team, well last night the Kernels knocked off a really good #4 ranked in Class “AA” team in Harrisburg 48-42 at the Palace.  Back on January 9th the Kernels came close in Harrisburg but lost 47-43 after leading heading into he 4th quarter.  Last night the Kernels fell behind 19-12 but then went on a 9-0 run to jump start the win.  Mitchell led 23-21 at halftime and 37-31 heading into the final quarter.  Mitchell would build an eight-point lead and win by six.  The Kernels improved to 7-10 overall and 5-9 in the ESD.  It was the four-two zone trap defense that gave the Tigers fits the whole game and allowed Mitchell to take control and never gave back the lead.  Besides the defense last night, it was the free throw line that won it for the Kernels as they shot 21 of 32 compared to just 5 of 8 for Harrisburg on the night.  Harrisburg fell to 13-4 overall and 12-3 in the ESD with the loss.  The Shay’s Player of the Game was junior Tayler Factor who only scored six points but also had seven rebounds, four steals and three assists and played solid defense.  Chelsea Brewster and Jordyn Cranny led Mitchell with eight points followed by Mac Miller with seven points and 10 rebounds.  Tess Limberg and Avia Haley came off the bench to score six points each in a balanced attack.  Mitchell shot 30% for the game but made 5-of-9 3-pointers and committed only 13 turnovers.  Harrisburg shot 32% including 5-for-17 on 3-pointers and the Tigers turned the ball over 15 times.  The Mitchell girls will not play at #5 Sioux Falls O'Gorman on Saturday night and then will host #1 Aberdeen Central on February 20th and travel to Pierre on February 23rd to end the regular season.

In sub varsity action last night, the Harrisburg JV won 52-34. Tess Limberg had 10 points for Mitchell.  The Tiger sophomores won 55-47.  Haley Hohn led all scorers with 18 for the Kernels while Regan Waddell and Avia Haley each scored eight.

It is poll day today from the South Dakota Media.
