The Mitchell Kernel volleyball team played their strongest opponent of the season last night as the Kernels hosted Yankton at the Senior High Gym and lost 3 to 0.  Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-23, and 26-24.  Mitchell had late leads in all three sets but failed to close them out and Yankton took advantage of 34 unforced errors by Mitchell to win.  Mitchell led 22 to 20 in set one and Yankton scored the next five to win, in set two Mitchell held a 23 to 22 lead and let it slip away, and the third set Mitchell held a 24 to 23 lead and could not finish the set.  Dana Misiaszek led the Kernels, now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ESD Conference, with 12 kills followed by Kerri Young with nine kills, Morgan Overweg finished with 11 digs, Courtney Miller had 11 digs, Megan Farnham also had 10 digs, and setter Charlee Nelson had 24 assists.  The junior varsity won in three sets to improve to 3-1 overall on the season.  The Kernel varsity will close out their five match home stand to open the season when they host #4 ranked Huron at the Corn Palace as part of the DWU Corn Palace Volleyball Classic.  This is the first time ever a high school or college match has been in the Palace.  Mitchell will host Huron Saturday night at 8:00pm.  The JV will play in the Armory gym at 4:30pm followed by the sophomore team around 5:45pm.  The freshman A team will play at the high school at 4:30pm followed by the freshman B team around 5:45pm.  Adult tickets at the Palace are $7.00 and student tickets are $4.00.  No admission will be charged at the senior high gym on Saturday to watch the freshman teams.  After Saturday the Kernel volleyball team will hit the road for the first time this season when they head to Brandon Valley on Tuesday September 14th

 

The Mitchell Christian volleyball team traveled to Huron last night to play James Valley Christian and came away with a 3 to 0 loss.  Scores of the match were 25-13, 25-18, and 25-16.  Mackenzie VanLaecken had eight kills and Mariah Nelson added four kills.  The Eagles fall to 1-1 overall and will be in Woonsocket on Thursday night.

 

The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team opened its Great Plains Athletic Conference season last night and its first conference foe was one of the toughest squads in the country.  The Tigers fell 3 to 0 to Northwestern College, ranked #5 in the NAIA, in Orange City, Iowa.  Game scores were 25-10, 25-14 and 25-10.  Senior Ashley Kley led the DWU offense with eight kills. Andrea Johnson and Meghan Cronberg each finished with three. Carina Fesenmaier had 13 set assists and Brooke Warne led the defense with seven digs. Sarah Stahlke added five digs.  The Tigers are now 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the GPAC. They open their home season Friday and Saturday when they play host to the first-ever Corn Palace Classic at the World’s Only Corn Palace. DWU plays Colorado Christian at Noon on Friday and Dickinson State of North Dakota at 8:00pm on Friday.  The Tigers will then battle Kansas Wesleyan at 2:00pm Saturday and Valley City State of North Dakota at 6:00pm Saturday.  Other matches on Saturday at the Palace have Hanson playing Marion at Noon, the Custer Battlefield Highway Conference Tourney Championship at 4:00pm, and the Mitchell Huron match at 8:00pm. 

 

Dakota Wesleyan University junior Dani Bellet continued her winning streak and helped the Tiger women’s golf team pick up its first win of the season Tuesday afternoon at the Morningside Invite at Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Iowa.  Bellet shot a 78 to beat the University of Sioux Falls’ Allison Zeller, who took second with an 82. Bellet shot a 38 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine to pick up her 11th win in the past 12 meets. Not counting the NAIA National Tournament, Bellet has won 11 straight tournaments dating back to the 2009 fall season.  Dakota Wesleyan shot a team total of 348 to take first at the nine-team tournament. Midland Lutheran took second with a 354, Sioux Falls was third with a 366 and Morningside and Morningside II took fourth and fifth.  Also contributing to the Tigers’ team score was senior Carly Hayes, who took fifth with an 87. Molly Webster shot an 89 and finished in seventh, Samantha Mogck shot a 94 and Emilie Palo finished with a 96.  Kamie Roesler, Chelsea Boddicker and Chelsea Burback competed individually at the tournament. Roesler, a freshman, carded an 83 and took third and Boddicker tied for eighth with a 90. Burback shot a 99. Five of the tournament’s top 10 finishers were from Dakota Wesleyan.  Up next for the Tigers is the first Great Plains Athletic Qualifier of the season. DWU hosts the GPAC meet at Lakeview Golf Course on Saturday in Mitchell.

The Mitchell girl’s tennis team, 7-2 overall, will be off until Thursday when they host Sioux Falls Washington at Hitchcock Park with action starting at 4:00pm.  Next Monday they make a trip to Sioux Falls to play Roosevelt. 

 

Friday the Kernel boy’s golf team will be in Yankton for the Buck Invite that starts at 10:00am.  Saturday the golf team will be in Brookings for an invite that starts at 8:00am.

The Mitchell soccer team will be off until Saturday when they head to Sioux Falls to play Lincoln and Sioux Falls Christian.  Next Tuesday the girl’s soccer team will host Vermillion at the Pepsi Soccer Complex. 

 

Thursday the Mitchell freshman football team will host Huron at Joe Quintal Field.  Kick-off will be at 4:15pm Thursday.  The Mitchell 8th grade football team will be in Madison for a 4:30pm kick-off on Thursday afternoon.  The 7th grade team will also be in Madison on Thursday. 

 

The DWU Tiger football team, coming off a nice blow out win over Dordt College on Saturday in Sioux Center Iowa will open their home schedule on Saturday against Concordia University with kick-off set for 1:00pm at Joe Quintal Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

 

The USD Coyote football team returns to action on KORN on Saturday at the Coyotes play the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis with kick-off Saturday set for 11:00am.  KORN pre-game set for 10:00am on AM 1490. 

 

The South Dakota State University football team opens the 2010 season Saturday afternoon at Delaware, in a battle between two nationally ranked programs.  Kickoff is slated for 12:06pm Central Time at Delaware Stadium in Newark, Del.  SDSU, 8-4 last season en route to it’s first-ever berth in the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs, is ranked ninth in both the Sports Network/Fathead.com and the FCS Coaches’ polls this week.  The Fighting Blue Hens enter the week ranked 16th in the Sports Network poll and 17th by the FCS Coaches. Delaware opened the season on September 2nd with a 31-0 home victory over NCAA Division II opponent West Chester, Pa.
