‘Outlander’ stars reveal their ideal Valentine’s Day dates — for their characters

L-R, Heughan, Balfe/STARZ(NEW YORK) — In honor of Valentine’s Day and ahead of Sunday night’s return of arguably one of the most romantic shows on television, STARZ’s Outlander, ABC Audio caught up with cast members Sam Heughan, his onscreen love Caitriona Balfe, and Richard Rankin, and asked them what their characters’ ideal dates would be for the big day.

For the uninitiated, Balfe plays Claire, a combat nurse from 1945 who is swept 200 years in the past, only to fall for a Scottish warrior named Jamie — proving true love is literally timeless.

Their characters’ ideal dates, however, are as different as their backgrounds.

Heughan, whose heartthrob status earned him and his character, Jamie, the hashtag “KiltDaddy,” says, “Probably a stable somewhere for Jamie with some whiskey.”

Balfe laughed, asking, “By himself?”

“By himself,” Sam agreed, with a chuckle.

Balfe responded, “I think for Claire it would be a lovely picnic by the river…In the rain in Scotland with Jamie.”

Heughan added, “With no view.”

Rankin, for his part, reflected a more traditional date for his character Roger’s beloved, Brianna.

“Old Roger, let’s say season two Roger — it would be out for an old-school romantic dinner,” he says. “Pick Brianna up — he’d have a bunch of flowers behind his back. Presented like it was the best most endearing surprise ever with a flourish, with a flurry of flowers, take her out dinner, and he’d walk her home and say goodnight, I think. Until the following date, Brianna.”

Outlander returns Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on STARZ.
