New A&E documentary about David Cassidy reveals the truth about the cause of the pop star’s death

Photo by A&E Network – Copyright 2018(LOS ANGELES) — David Cassidy: The Last Session, a new A&E Biography episode focusing on the late pop idol, premieres this Monday, June 11, and features a surprising revelation: He lied about what caused his death.

In a phone conversation with Cassidy featured in the program, taped a few weeks before his death in November 2017, the singer admits that the dementia and other health issues he claimed to be experiencing were actually the result of his alcoholism.

The special features footage filmed last year for a documentary originally intended to focus on Cassidy’s struggle with dementia.  During that time, in the middle of a recording session for a tribute album to his late father, actor Jack Cassidy, David passed out and was rushed to a hospital.

After regaining consciousness, Cassidy spoke by phone with an A&E producer and admitted, “I have a liver disease…There is no sign of me having dementia at this stage of my life. It was complete alcohol poisoning. And the fact is, I lied about my drinking. The head doctor at the hospital, she said, ‘I believe that your dementia was directly related to your alcoholism.'”

He added, “I did it to myself, man. I did it to myself to cover up the sadness. And the emptiness.”

David Cassidy: The Last Session also profiles the singer’s life and career, including his massive success in the early-’70s as star of The Partridge Family. It features candid interviews with David, his Partridge Family co-stars Danny Bonaduce and Brian Forster, his longtime friend Alice Cooper and others close to him. In addition, the show includes unheard audio tapes from 1976 and rare footage.

The special airs at 9 p.m. ET on A&E.

Mission Kim-Possible: President Trump commutes sentence for grandmother Kim Kardashian defended

ABC/Byron Cohen(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — ABC News has confirmed President Trump has commuted the sentence of Alice Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother serving a life sentence on drug charges, whose cause was championed by reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

“Best News Ever!!” Kardashian tweeted.

Kardashian lawyer Shawn Holley told ABC News, “I’m sobbing too many tears of joy and gratitude right now to offer a cogent statement.”

In a statement, the White House said in part, “Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates.”

Watch Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sing and fall in love in “A Star Is Born” trailer

Neil Preston/Warner Bros.(LOS ANGELES) — The much-anticipated trailer for the remake of A Star Is Born is out.

Directed by and starring Bradley Cooper, plus Lady Gaga in her big screen debut, the trailer makes it appear as though a star has indeed been born.  Gaga, completely without the glam trappings we accustomed to seeing, plays an aspiring brunette singer/songwriter named Ally, and seems completely believable in the role.

The trailer begins with Cooper’s character, Jackson, singing in front of a huge festival crowd, and then hitting the bottle after. His pal, Noodles, played by Dave Chappelle, tells him, “Y’know, man, in the old days, I always knew you were gonna do something. That you’d be all right.  This is the first time I’m worried about you.”

Next, we see Jackson discovering Ally singing in a bar, which leads him to ask her if she writes her own songs. “I don’t sing my own songs. I just don’t feel comfortable,” Ally tells him. “Almost every single person has told me they like the way I sounded but they didn’t like the way I look.”

“I think you’re beautiful,” Jackson replies.

Cue a montage of Jackson giving Ally her big break, and the two falling in love and jet-setting around the world as her star continues to rise.  At the end, Ally belts out a song that, according to Entertainment Weekly, is called “The Shallow,” co-written by Gaga collaborator Mark Ronson.

According to EW, the movie’s soundtrack will feature more songs written by Ronson, as well as top Nashville producer Dave Cobb, four-time Grammy-winning Americana and alt-country artist Jason Isbell, and Lukas Nelson, bandleader and son of country legend Willie Nelson, with whom Gaga has duetted in the past.

A Star Is Born hits theaters October 5.

EPA announces renovations on HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” violated lead paint rules

Photo by Donna Ward/Getty ImagesThe Environmental Protection Agency says it has settled with Chris and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Homes of the HGTV show Fixer Upper for violating rules related to lead-based paint.

Paint made with lead is no longer used in new homes, but the EPA has rules to prevent chips or dust from lead paint from spreading when older homes are being renovated. The Centers for Disease Control says that it is not safe to have any exposure to lead and that children exposed to lead can face health and developmental problems.

The EPA reviewed video footage of several seasons of Fixer Upper and found that in 33 homes renovated on the show it, “did not depict the lead-safe work practices normally required,” according to the EPA’s website.

The complaint said that Chip and Joanna Gaines did not follow all the regulations to minimize risks from exposure to lead paint such as covering floors and vents with plastic to capture paint chips, providing information on risks from lead exposure to homeowners and using contractors certified by the EPA to handle renovations involving lead paint. The EPA said that Magnolia responded immediately to solve the problem.

“It’s important that consumers and contractors understand that improper home renovation can expose residents and workers to hazardous lead dust,” Susan Bodine, assistant administrator in EPA’s enforcement and compliance office said in a statement. “Through this settlement, Magnolia is putting in place safeguards to ensure the safety of its renovation work and making meaningful contributions toward the protection of children and vulnerable communities from exposure to lead-based paint.”

As part of the settlement, Chip Gaines was shown in one of the episodes of the current season explaining precautions renovators should take when dealing with lead paint. The company will also spend $160,000 to remedy hazards from lead-based paints in homes around Waco, Texas where residents are at high risk from exposure to lead-based paint and will pay a $40,000 civil penalty.

The show Fixer Upper on HGTV is currently airing its fifth and final season. Magnolia Homes did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jared Leto reportedly set to star in stand-alone Joker film

Warner Bros.(LOS ANGELES) — After the massive success of Marvel’s Avengers and movies featuring its various characters, Warner Bros. is trying its luck at expanding its world of superheroes with a new Joker film.

Jared Leto is set to reprise his role from Suicide Squad in a stand-alone film that follows the popular villain, Joker, Variety reports. The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman will also produce the film, which has no writer or director attached yet.

Fans were disappointed in Suicide Squad after Leto’s Joker barely appeared in the film. Even Leto himself was let down with his character’s absence in the film.

“There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot,” he said in an interview with IGH. “There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.”

This upcoming film is not to be confused with another Joker film in development. That film will be directed by Todd Phillips and will star Joaquin Phoenix as the “Clown Prince of Crime.”

The Leto project is not the first to put the spotlight on a character from Suicide Squad. Last year, it was announced that Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn in her own stand-alone film.

The sequel to Suicide Squad is set to start production in 2019.

Have a cosmo or two: “Sex and the City” celebrates 20th anniversary

Photo by Mark Mainz/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Raise your cosmo glass: Sex and the City turns 20 today.

The show that popularized cosmopolitans, Manolo Blahniks, Magnolia Bakery, and so much more debuted on HBO June 6, 1998.

Based on a book by Candace Bushnell, it starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, and Kristin Davis as four best friends navigating life and love in NYC: respectively, the sex and relationships columnist Carrie, type-A lawyer Miranda, sex-positive publicist Samantha, and hopeless romantic art dealer Charlotte.

The show won seven Emmys, eight Golden Globes and three SAG Awards. It still appears in syndication worldwide.

Fans couldn’t get enough of Carrie and Co., even after the show concluded its six-season run in 2004. The series spawned two movies, 2008’s Sex and the City and 2010’s Sex and the City 2.

A third movie has been rumored for years, but last year, Cattrall squashed any hopes for a trilogy, telling Piers Morgan that she’s done with her character and that she’s “never been friends” with her co-stars. In subsequent months, she publicly took aim at Sarah Jessica Parker, rejecting SJP’s condolences after Cattrall’s brother passed away and calling Parker “cruel.”

Parker has tried to distance herself from the so-called feud, telling Vulture in April, “there is no catfight.” She added that she feels privileged to be a part of the SATC franchise and said, “I don’t want this to eclipse it or change its experience for that audience that was so good to us for so long.”  Parker now stars on another HBO show, Divorce.

Kristin Davis spends much of her time working for humanitarian causes and continues to act.  Cynthia Nixon, meanwhile, has been putting her time in the “City” to good use: She’s currently running for governor of New York.

Cast members talk their dream superpowers at “Incredibles 2” premiere

Disney Pixar(LOS ANGELES) — The cast of The Incredibles 2 came together Tuesday night on the red carpet for the premiere of the film in Hollywood, California — almost 14 years after the original debuted in 2004.

Holly Hunter, who plays matriarch Elastigirl in the film, said the wait is worth it.

“This movie has the ingredients that people really love to see, which is this family first and foremost and they are superheroes second,” she told ABC Radio.

Despite the success of her loving character, Hunter went on to explain that she would love a totally different superpower than her elastic character.

“I wanted to be able to swim under water without having to hold my breath,” she said. “That was my dream.”

Sophia Bush, who plays Voyd, told ABC Radio she would love to teleport to avoid airports.

But, it’s Craig T. Nelson — who plays the matriarch of the family — who wished for the most powerful superpower.

“Compassion,” he said. “I would like to be filled with enough grace and mercy to see the world in a compassionate way rather than the angst, the anger, and hatred that is going on right now.”

Incredibles 2 storms into theaters June 15.

Stephen Colbert gives Bill Clinton a “do-over” on Monica Lewinsky comments on “The Late Show”

Photo: Scott Kowalchyk/CBS ©2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.(NEW YORK) — Bill Clinton appeared on Tuesday’s Late Show to promote his book, The President Is Missing, but before he and co-author James Patterson had a chance to talk about it, host Stephen Colbert grilled the president over remarks he made about Monica Lewinsky that were criticized as being tone-deaf, and offered him a “do-over.”

During a Today show interview a day earlier, Clinton appeared angry when asked about Lewinsky, the White House intern with whom he had an affair while serving as president. On Tuesday, he defended his statements by saying, “It wasn’t my finest hour, but the important thing is that was a very painful thing that happened 20 years ago, and I apologized to my family, to Monica Lewinsky and her family, to the American people.”

“I meant it then, I meant it now. I’ve had to live with the consequences every day since, and I still believe this #MeToo movement is long overdue, necessary, and should be supported,” he insisted.

When Colbert questioned Clinton on why he was surprised at the line of questioning, in light of #MeToo, the former president explained, that “it started with and assertion that I had never apologized, as if I had never tried to come to grips with it and as if there had been no attempt to hold me accountable, which anybody who lived through that and knew the facts knew it wasn’t so.”

“Nonetheless,” he continued, “I realize, ‘Hey, there are a lot of people that have, don’t have any memory of that,’ and all they saw was me mad and I seemed to be tone-deaf, to put it mildly.”

David Spade speaks out after sister-in-law Kate Spade’s apparent suicide: “I still can’t believe it”

ABC(NEW YORK) — When Kate Spade was found in dead in her apartment Tuesday from an apparent suicide, she left behind grieving family members — including her famous brother-in-law, comedian David Spade, who paid tribute to the successful designer via social media.

In an Instagram post, the former Saturday Night Live performer posted a picture of himself with Kate at a holiday gathering.

“Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos. We had so much fun that day. She was so sharp and quick on her feet. She could make me laugh so hard,” Spade wrote.

He added, “I still can’t believe it. It’s a rough world out there people, try to hang on.”

David also posted a different picture on Twitter, complimenting Kate’s comedic personality again.

“Katy at my book signing. I love this pic of her. So pretty. I don’t think everyone knew how f***ing funny she was,” he wrote.

The designer’s older sister, Reta Saffo, told the Kansas City Star that Kate was struggling with mental illness and self-medicating with alcohol. Saffo insists she attempted to get Kate professional help.

“After numerous attempts, I finally let go,” Saffo told the newspaper. “Sometimes you simply cannot save people from themselves! One of the last things she said to me was, ‘Reta, I know you hate funerals and don’t attend them, but for me would you please come to mine. I know she perhaps had a plan, but she insisted she did not.”

Kate also left behind her husband, Andy, and 13-year-old daughter, Frances. In a statement, the family said, “We are all devastated by today’s tragedy. We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.”
