‘The Deuce’ coming back, ‘Sharp Objects’ not; the end of the ‘Veep’ adminstration announced at HBO’s TCA presentation

HBO/Justin M. Lubin(LOS ANGELES) — HBO laid out its upcoming schedule at the summer Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday.

The seventh and final season of its Emmy winning comedy Veep will air in spring 2019, HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys noted, confirming an ABC Radio scoop from cast member Tony Hale earlier this year. The show had halted production last fall while star Julia Louis-Dreyfus received treatment for cancer.

Meanwhile, the subscription service has renewed the period drama The Deuce, which will return for a second season September 9. Co-executive producer and star James Franco plays twin brothers on the show, which chronicles the porn industry in New York City during the 1970 and ’80s. Maggie Gyllenhaal also stars. Fans also learned that season two picks up five years after the first season left off.

In other HBO news, its acclaimed drama Sharp Objects, won’t be back for a sophomore season. The limited drama series stars Amy Adams as a reporter who returns to her hometown to cover the murder of a preteen girl and the disappearance of another, while coming to grips with her own tragic past. “It’s a very dark character, very dark material,” Bloys explained. “Amy doesn’t want to live in this character again and I can’t blame her, it’s a lot to take on for an actress.”
