‘1917’ dethrones ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ with $36.5 million weekend

Universal Pictures(NEW YORK) — Sam Mendes’ 1917 capitalized on its two Golden Globe wins last week, topping the box office with an estimated $36.5 million in its first week of wide release, pushing Lusasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker out of the top spot after three weeks.

The weekend’s two new releases, the R-rated comedy Like a Boss, and the deep sea thriller Underwater, both finished below expectations.

Like a Boss, starring Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne and Salma Hayek, delivered an estimated $10 million, putting it in a dead heat for fourth place with the legal drama Just Mercy, which also expanded nationwide following two weeks in limited release.

Underwater, starring Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and T.J. Miller, failed to make the top five, landing in seventh place with an estimated $7 million.

Grabbing second places after spending its first three weeks of release at number one was The Rise of Skywalker, earning an estimated $15 million. The film added another $24 million-plus overseas, bringing its worldwide totals to $989.6 million. Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
