‘Black Panther’, ‘black-ish’ big winners, Chris Rock takes down Jussie Smollett at NAACP Image Awards

Marvel Studios(LOS ANGELES) — The NAACP Image Awards were handed out Saturday night in a ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood in a ceremony that aired live on TV One.

Black Panther, which earned the most nominations with 13 and ultimately snagged eight at the ceremony, including Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor for Chadwick Boseman and Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress for Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira.

In the TV categories, ABC’s black-ish ruled; in the drama categories, Power and its star Omari Hardwick were winners, as were Taraji P. Henson for Empire, Regina King for Seven Seconds, Kerry Washington for How to Get Away with Murder and Michael B. Jordan for Fahrenheit 451.

The night also made light of the recent controversy surrounding Jussie Smollett, with a roast of the Empire star by Chris Rock. While Smollett was nominated, he didn’t win and didn’t appear at the ceremony, either. Meanwhile, Rock — who said he was told not to do any jokes about the beleaguered star — slammed Smollett for his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime in January.

“What a waste of light skin,” cracked Rock, “You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be outta here. I would be f**king running Hollywood!”

“What the hell was he thinking?” asked Rock. “You’re ‘Jessie’ from now on… You don’t even get the ‘U’ no more. That ‘U’ was respect. You ain’t gettin’ no respect from me.”
