* Captain Marvel — The 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, set in 1995, stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who turns into the titular character — one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes — when she’s infused with alien superpowers after the Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict. Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg and Jude Law also star. Rated PG-13.
Opening in limited release Friday:
* Gloria Bell — Julianne Moore plays the title character in this re-imagining of Chilean writer/director Sebastián Lelio’s 2013 film, Gloria, about a free-spirited 50-something divorced woman who seeks love at L.A. dance clubs. Also starring John Turturro, Michael Cera, Caren Pistorius, Brad Garrett, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Rita Wilson, Sean Astin, and Holland Taylor. Rated R.
* The Kid — Vincent D’Onofrio directed this semi-autobiographical western about a young boy named Rio — played by Jake Schur — who forms an unlikely alliance with local sheriff Pat Garrett and infamous outlaw Billy the Kid, portrayed by Ethan Hawke and Dane DeHaan, respectively, on a mission to rescue his sister, who was kidnapped from the boy’s cruel uncle, played by Chris Pratt. Rated R.
