A 25-year-old Florida woman who’d been missing for six months was discovered earlier this week when she unexpectedly gave birth on a New York City subway train with the help of fellow passengers.
The birth took place on a southbound W train, where passengers quickly stepped in to help. The New York Police Department confirmed that both the mother and baby were conscious and alert before being transported to Bellevue Hospital for care.
The woman was later identified as Jenny Saint Pierre, who’d been reported missing in Hollywood, Florida, last September and was last seen by her ex-boyfriend on August 5th.
Saint Pierre’s older sister, Stephania, identified her after seeing a video of the birth on social media, recognizing her sister’s pink duffel bag and voice.
Eyewitnesses describe the moment as miraculous, with transit workers and passengers coming together to make sure both the mother and her newborn were safe.
NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow praised their efforts, calling it a reflection of the city’s spirit. “We are thrilled that both mother and Baby W are doing well,” Crichlow wrote in a statement, “And look forward to welcoming both of them back aboard for a lifetime of reliable-and hopefully less dramatic-rides.”
