Thomas Jones, a former inmate, recently achieved a significant milestone by graduating with a master’s degree from Cornell University in Industrial and Labor Relations.
The grad says he’s grateful for the challenges he’s experienced, including two stints in prison, because it’s prepared him to make the most of future opportunities. At his graduation ceremony, Jones was supported by dozens of family members who traveled from across the country to celebrate his achievement.
Jones’ journey began with a conviction for unlawful possession of a handgun at age 20, resulting in a three-year prison sentence. After getting out early for good behavior, he had trouble finding work because of his record, but eventually got a warehouse job and worked double shifts to support his son, who was born prematurely in 2012.
After a second conviction for possession of a weapon, Jones was sentenced to 7 ½ years. He ended up serving over three years, but during that time, he adopted a new mindset and was determined to focus on bettering his future.
During his transition from prison, Jones earned an associate’s degree from community college and then attended Rutgers University, earning a bachelor’s degree in human resources management in 2022. He went on to be accepted to Cornell for graduate school and earned his master’s degree this year. Jones now wants to share his story — the good and the bad — hoping he can inspire others to strive to achieve more than they think is possible.
