‘It: Chapter Two’ scares up $91 million to top the weekend box office

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures(NEW YORK) — It: Chapter Two killed it at the box office this weekend, opening with an estimated $91 million for a first-place debut — not quite the $123 million the first film opened with back in 2017, but good enough to rank it as the second-largest horror film opening of all-time behind the original, which itself is the only horror film to ever open with more than $100 million.

The franchise’s latest film, starring Bill Skarsgård returning as Pennywise — along with James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone and Andy Bean as the adult versions of the Losers Club — also grabbed an estimated $94 million overseas, for a $185 million global opening.

Angel Has Fallen, which topped the box office in its first two weeks of release, dropped to number two, delivering an estimated $6 million. That brings its domestic total to more than $53 million.

Third place belonged to the R-rated comedy Good Boys, earning an estimated $5.4 million in its fourth week of release.

Disney’s The Lion King landed in fourth place, earning an estimated $4.2 million. It’s now grossed $529.1 million stateside and added an estimated $13.4 million internationally, for a global tally just shy of $1.6 billion. The film now ranks seventh on the list of all-time box office earners both domestically and abroad. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

The faith-based drama Overcomer rounded out the top five with an estimated $3.75 million in its third week of release.
