(NEW YORK) — John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum ended Avengers: Endgame‘s three-week run at number one, beating expectations with an estimated $57 million opening weekend.
The third chapter in the John Wick film franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the master assassin, also topped both of its predecessors’ opening weekends: the first and second films in the franchise debuted, respectively, with $14.4 million and $30.4 million. It’s also Reeves’ second-biggest opening ever, behind 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded, which collected $91.8 million.
Overseas, John Wick 3 grabbed an estimated $92.2 million, also a franchise high.
The aforementioned Avengers: Endgame dropped to second place in its fourth week of release, earning an estimated $29.4 million. It’s now the second-highest grossing film domestically, surpassing Avatar‘s $761 million and trailing only 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $937 million.
Endgame‘s worldwide totals currently stand at 2.62 billion, placing it second behind Avatar‘s $2.78 billion.
Finishing in third place was Pokémon Detective Pikachu, delivering an estimated $24.8 million. The motion-capture/live-action adventure still dominated the international box office with $53.8 million.
A Dog’s Journey, the sequel to 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose, once again starring Dennis Quaid and featuring the voice of Josh Gad, opened with an estimated $8 million haul. The Hustle, in its second week of release, rounded out the top five with an estimated $6.1 million.
The weekend’s third new release, The Sun Is Also a Star, starring black-ish‘s Yara Shahidi and Riverdale‘s Charles Melton, disappointed in its debut, delivering an estimated $2.6 million.
