Disney(LOS ANGELES) — Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet and MGM’s Creed II delivered a one-two punch at the box office, leading what turned out to be the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever.
The followup to 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph — with John C. Reilly once again voicing the titular character — scored the second-highest Thanksgiving five-day opening ever, gobbling up an estimated $84.5 million. It also gave Disney Animation Studios the top three Thanksgiving debuts of all time, with Disney overall holding eleven of the top thirteen spots.
Additionally, Ralph Breaks the Internet delivered an estimated $41.5 million overseas, for a total of $125.9 million worldwide. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.
Creed II — The sequel to 2015’s Creed, featuring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone reprising their roles as Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa, respectively — took second place, earning an estimated $55.8 million, driving it to the the largest opening for a live-action film over the Thanksgiving weekend ever and the seventh largest Thanksgiving five-day opening. That’s $16 million ahead of the original. It raked in an estimated $35.29 million for the three-day.
The Grinch, the CGI-animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, finished in third place for the three-day weekend, grabbing an estimated $30.2 million. It delivered an estimated $42 million for the five-day.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald dropped from first to fourth place in its second week of release, bringing in an estimated $42.9 million for the five-day weekend and $29.65 for the three-day.
Rounding out the top five was Bohemian Rhapsody, earning and estimated $19.37 million over the five-day holiday and $13.855 for the three-day weekend.
The weekend’s other major release, Robin Hood, starring Taron Edgerton and Jamie Foxx, fizzled in its debut, earning an estimated $9.1 million for the three-day and just $14.2 million over five-days.
