(NEW YORK) — Shazam! lived up to its hype, and then some, delivering an estimated $53.4 million in its opening weekend. Adding in the money earned from a Fandango special event last month, the film adaption of the DC comics character starring Zachary Levi as the titular character has earned a total of $56.7 million stateside.
Overseas, Shazam! grossed an estimated $102 million, bringing its global tally to around $158.8 million.
Second place belonged to the latest film adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. Starring Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz and John Lithgow, it scared up an estimated $25 million in its debut weekend. The makes it the second-largest opening for a Stephen King adaptation, behind 2017’s It. Pet Sematary took in an additional $17.3 million overseas.
The news wasn’t as good for Disney’s live-action remake of Dumbo, which fell to third place in its second week of release, putting it below expectations with an estimated $18.2 million. Internationally, the film delivered an estimated $39.6 million, bringing its worldwide total to over $214 million.
Jordan Peele’s horror thriller Us landed in fourth place, grabbing an estimated $13.8 million in its third week of release. Its domestic totals currently stand at upward of $152 million, which now places it among the top-grossing R-rated horror films ever. To date, it’s collected $216.5 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top five is Disney-Marvel’s Captain Marvel, delivering an estimated $12.68 million. The film has now topped $374 million in the U.S., with a global tally of around $1.037 billion. Disney is the parent company of Marvel and ABC News.
The Best of Enemies, the civil rights drama starring Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell, could only muster a sixth-place finish, earning an estimated $4.5 million.
