(LOS ANGELES) — It was nothing but good vibes and giggles on Wednesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg shared the couch to promote their new movie, The Beach Bum.
Despite it being the first time the Texas bred Oscar winner and Cali rap legend have worked together, the pair were peas in a pod — or buds on a fern, as it were.
Snoop described meeting Matthew as “magic,” saying “I think certain people in life are meant for each other. I think me and Matthew were meant for each other.”
In the movie, McConaughey plays a character named Moondog, a fun-loving, pot-smoking writer who lives down and out in Florida. Snoop plays the uniquely named Lingerie, though the plan, originally, was for Snoop to play himself in the movie.
That shifted after he read the script and spoke with the film’s director, Harmony Korine. As McConaughey explains it, Snoop had one invaluable note: “My character’s not Snoop. My character’s name is Ray.” Short for Lingerie.
McConaughey also shared a story about filming a particular scene in which Snoop, offended by having to use a prop version of marijuana that was actually oregano, switched out the Italian spice for the real thing. After filming the scene, Matthew says Snoop informed him “Yo Moondog, that wasn’t prop weed, that was Snoop weed.”
Full of surprises, Snoop also shared that he’s a big fan of another musician who makes a cameo in Beach Bum: Jimmy Buffett. Snoop said the two musicians share a “flavorful” Jacuzzi scene together. The unlikely Parrothead called it a beautiful “culmination of spirits that deserve each other.”
Beach Bum, which also stars Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Martin Lawrence and Jonah Hill, debuts in theaters March 29.
