‘The House with a Clock in Its Walls’ tops the box office with $26.8 million weekend

Storyteller Distribution Co., LLC(LOS ANGELES) — The House with a Clock in Its Walls topped a slow box office weekend. The dark fantasy comedy, starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, beat expectations, delivering an estimated $26.85 million.

A Simple Favor, in its second week of release, took second place, earning an estimated $10.4 million, just ahead of The Nun, in third place with an estimated $10.2 million. The fourth film in The Conjuring franchise has now topped $100 million stateside.

Last week’s box office champ, The Predator, dropped to fourth place this weekend, grabbing an estimated $8.7 million.

Rounding out the top five was Crazy Rich Asians, delivering an estimated $6.5 million. The film has racked up just shy of $160 million here in the states, ranking it as the seventh highest grossing romantic comedy of all time.

Michael Moore’s latest political documentary, Farenheit 11/9, led this weekend’s other major releases, though it managed just an eighth place finish with an estimated $3.1 million.

As for the others, Life Itself — which boasted an ensemble cast including Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Mandy Patinkin, Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas — delivered the second worst opening for a film debuting in over 2,500 locations, earning an estimated $2.1 million. Assassination Nation, the black comedy thriller, did even worse, only managing an estimated $1 million from 1,403 theaters.

Collette, starring Keira Knightley, and The Sisters Brothers, featuring John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix, both did well opening in limited release, earning an estimated $156,788 and $122,02, respectively.
