(LOS ANGELES) — Here are the films opening nationwide on Friday:
* Venom — This Spider-Man spinoff stars Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a jaded journalist who becomes the host of a parasitic alien being that turns him into the fearsome, shape-shifting, titular creature. Also starring Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. Rated PG-13.
* A Star Is Born — This fourth iteration of the classic film, which is already generating Oscar buzz, stars Lady Gaga — in her first big screen debut — as Ally, a struggling singer who is mentored by Bradley Cooper — making his directorial debut — as fading country star Jackson Maine. The two start a romance which runs into problems when Ally’s fame starts to eclipse Maine’s. Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle and Andrew Dice Clay also star. Rated R.
Opening in limited release on Friday:
* The Hate U Give — This film adaptation of Angela Thomas’ novel of the same name follows a 16-year-old girl — played by Amandla Stenberg — who must decide if she’ll stand up for what she believes after witnessing the shooting of her best friend by a police officer. Also starring Regina Hall, Issa Rae, Common, and Anthony Mackie. Rated PG-13.
* Loving Pablo — Penélope Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem star in this film, based on Virginia Vallejo’s memoir, Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar, which follows journalist Vallejo’s affair with Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar between 1983-1987. Peter Sarsgaard also stars. Rated R.
